The downside of train travel, aside from being at the mercy of freight trains, is sometimes not knowing exactly where you are. I’d say it’s more of a blessing than a curse, but occasionally it’s nice to know the names of places that pass by.
Timetables are nice and all, but earlier in the day we were stopped in the middle of nowhere (literally) for an hour and a half to let a freight pass. A group of us were trying to figure out 1) where we were and 2) just how far behind schedule we were falling. Suffice it to say, we weren’t exactly sure of either.
I’ve had this image sitting on my hard drive ever since the trip and it didn’t occur to me to slap down some Google-fu and figure out where exactly it was taken. I knew we were about two hours behind schedule and it was taken before our station stop in Hornepayne, but those were my only leads.
I Google Mapped a few stops leading up to Hornepayne and despite not having any street view images available, Oba’s layout seemed like the closest fit. Switching over to an image search, I came across this website (which is the source of the inset image) and BINGO! We have a match! Happy-happy, joy-joy.
Some people may say I have the skills of a stalker, but I find great fun in the joy of the hunt. Journalism school and working on the campus paper was the ultimate fun ride, almost on par with going over recorded interviews and picking out awesome quotes, allĀ while your story takes shape. As for now, it’s the little things like figuring out where pictures were taken (mine, or others’) that entertains me.
