Saxon Shore - Nothing Changes

I’m lying in bed listening to this song. On the wall directly across from me hangs this picture:

A number of years ago, when I was still in high school, I came across the body of an adolescent deer in the forest near my house. I’m not sure how it died but since the cusp of spring was upon us, the winter months had preserved the body fairly well. I didn’t have my camera with me at the time but I thought this would be an awesome photographic opportunity and returned an hour or so later. While there are a bunch of tiny things that I don’t like about the photo, or things I would most certainly do differently, it is still one of my favourites.

I paid another visit a few weeks after the photo was taken and discovered something had made quick work out of the body. All that was left was a few bones and the body itself was dragged a good six feet from where it originally lay. I didn’t know such predators existed in the midst of the suburbs but at least I knew the circle of life had continued.

So as I lay here listening to this song and thinking about the moment I went back to photograph the deer, I realized that it was one of the most beautiful moments in my life. Strange how we see beauty.
